Introduction
SAPPROS Nepal has been advocating the agenda of green development since 2016 and implementing related program activities contributing towards the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, scientists and medical professionals stressed the fact that poor metabolic health and unhealthy lifestyle are associated with poor immune system and pose high risk and severity of diseases including COVID-19. In this context, SAPPROS Nepal, under its green development agenda, has been advocating for promoting healthy lifestyles of people for improved immunity and health conditions, environmental justice, and economic stability through the SHFM.
Summary
The SHFM vision aligns with global efforts to combat the nutrition transition and the rise of non-communicable diseases, emphasizing the pivotal role of a healthy diet in mitigating health risks. The vision calls for a vigilant monitoring of food products, emphasizing the role of governments in shaping healthier food environments through strategic policies, education, and access to nutritious foods. Furthermore, the vision underscores the critical importance of addressing pesticide use and soil health. Chemical contamination through pesticides raises serious health concerns, demanding a more stringent approach to food safety. Simultaneously, adopting sustainable soil management practices becomes imperative to counteract declining soil fertility, promote agricultural sustainability, and safeguard food security. In essence, the “Healthy Lifestyle for Livelihoods Resilience through the Safe and Healthy Food Movement” vision is a comprehensive response to the multifaceted challenges posed by climate change, nutrition transition, and environmental degradation. It recognizes the interdependence of environmental health, personal wellbeing, and economic stability, calling for concerted efforts to secure a sustainable and resilient future for all. SAPPROS Nepal’s Healthy Lifestyle for Livelihoods Resilience vision envisages that by the year 2030 the Nepalese people will have achieved healthy lifestyle for livelihoods resilience through the Safe and Healthy Food Movement (SHFM).
